The eight departure points

Booking pages name the helipad and leave you to work out the rest. Six of the eight are in the far west of the city. Here is what each one costs you in travel time before the rotor turns.

7 departure points 4 areas of the city 1 in the Zona Sul 40 seller listings

Count the journey there

Most departure points sit in Barra da Tijuca or Recreio — 20 to 40 kilometres from Copacabana and Ipanema. In Rio traffic that is not a short ride, and you pay for it yourself unless the seller includes a transfer. Add it to the price before you compare two offers, or you are only comparing half the bill.

Lagoa and Urca

The only two departure points in the Zona Sul, both used by the same operator. The Lagoa helipad sits at Parque dos Patins on the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon, walkable from Ipanema and Leblon. The Urca helipad is on the hill by the Sugarloaf cable car — a few metres from the exit of the Urca hill station.

Jacarepaguá Airport

Roberto Marinho airport on Avenida Ayrton Senna, in Barra da Tijuca. Three sellers operate from here out of separate hangars — the address alone will not get you to the right one, so check the hangar number on your voucher.

Avenida das Américas 13750

Three sellers give this same street number as their departure point, under three different names. Whether that is one helipad or several next to each other we could not establish: two different postcodes and two different district names appear on the booking pages. Go by the name on your voucher, not by the number.

Recreio, Pontal and Vargem Grande

The westernmost group: Recreio Heliport, Helicentro do Pontal, and a base on Rua Dom Bosco in Vargem Grande. The furthest from the Zona Sul of anything on this site, and the ones where an included transfer is worth the most.
