Which helicopter flight over Rio is best?

Our pick for most visitors, and when another flight is the better choice.

For most visitors the best choice is a 25-minute flight. It is the shortest length that reaches Sugarloaf: on the largest seller’s itinerary the 20-minute circuit turns back after Christ the Redeemer, while the 25-minute one goes on over Copacabana, Arpoador, Urca and Sugarloaf. 4FLY flies it from Jacarepaguá, HelicopteRio from Recreio and Rio2Fly from Pontal. All three leave from the west of the city, so budget an hour each way from Copacabana, and keep a second day free in case the weather closes in. Which flight suits you?

Two questions: doors on or off, and how long you want to fly. The answer comes from the flight times and routes in the listings.

Question 1 of 2

How do you want to fly?

Question 2 of 2

How long do you want to be in the air?
Your flight

The whole city in forty minutes

Forty minutes is the only length that turns inland over the Maracanã stadium and the Sambadrome and crosses Guanabara Bay to the Museum of Tomorrow and Niterói. Between thirty and thirty-five minutes you mostly fly the 25-minute circuit, just slower. Thirty- to forty-five-minute helicopter tours over Rio

Doors off for photographs

No glass and no reflections, and your phone is tethered to your harness. You arrive an hour early, and the route is shorter than the same billed length with the doors on. HelicopteRio builds its thirty-five minutes around two photo stops. Doors-off helicopter flights over Rio

Travelling alone

Most shared flights need three passengers to depart. Vertical Rio flies with a single passenger at the same price per seat, with the doors off from the Clube de Aeronáutica. Doors-off helicopter flights over Rio

A charter for your group alone

A charter is priced per aircraft. Divided by a full cabin it often lands close to a shared seat; divided by two it does not. The charter from the Lagoa is the only flight that leaves from the Zona Sul. Private helicopter charter over Rio

Count the journey to the heliport

Most departure points sit in Barra da Tijuca, Recreio or Vargem Grande, 20 to 40 kilometres from Copacabana and Ipanema. Unless the seller includes a transfer, that ride is yours to pay and to plan. The eight departure points

FAQ

Will the flight go if I book alone?

Usually not. Most shared flights need three passengers to depart; if the seats do not fill you can wait, buy the empty seats or take a refund. One operator is the exception and departs with a single passenger at the same price per seat. If you are travelling alone or as a couple, that difference matters more than the price.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Flights depend on visibility and are cancelled or moved when it closes in. Every operator we checked refunds in full if they cancel. The practical advice, which one of them gives itself: book your first free day in Rio and keep a second one open.

Is doors off worth the extra?

For photographs, yes: no glass, no reflections, and you are tethered so your phone cannot fall. Two things to weigh against it: you arrive an hour earlier, and on at least one operator the doors-off route is shorter than the doors-on route of the same billed length.
