The length of the flight decides what you see

This is the one thing worth understanding before you book. The operators sell the same route at different lengths, and the shorter ones stop earlier. On the largest seller’s own itinerary, the 20-minute flight covers the western beaches and Christ the Redeemer — and turns back before Sugarloaf. Sugarloaf appears at 25 minutes. The Maracanã stadium, the Sambadrome and the Museum of Tomorrow only at 40. If you came to Rio for the postcard with Sugarloaf in it, twenty minutes is the wrong ticket.

Most flights leave from the far west of the city

Of the seven departure points, six sit in Barra da Tijuca, Recreio or Vargem Grande — 20 to 40 kilometres from Copacabana and Ipanema. Only one is in the Zona Sul: the helipad at the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon. The cheapest flight is rarely the cheapest morning. Three sellers include a hotel transfer; on two others you can add one for a stated surcharge.

The conditions vary more than the prices

Minimum party size runs from one passenger to four. Minimum age is 12, 15 or 16 depending on the operator. Weight limits run from 110 to 125 kilograms, and one operator weighs you on a scale at check-in. None of this appears in a price comparison, which is why it appears here.
